Peanut Butter and Jam

Difference Between Peanut Butter and Jam

Classic peanut butter and jam are two famous foods that are widely consumed due to their amazing flavour and texture. These are frequently consumed as munchies during the day, and many individuals combine them too. Yet, while these items have certain commonalities, they also have significant variances.

So, what exactly is the difference between peanut butter and jam?

In simple words, classic peanut butter is a smooth, creamy or crunchy peanut butter spread, whereas jam is a sweetened, fruit-based spread. Now, let’s explore several other aspects that differentiate both of them.

Ingredients

  • Classic peanut butter is prepared from peanuts that have been crushed into a paste. Peanut butter generally just has two ingredients: peanuts and salt.
  • Jam, on the other hand, is a thick, sweet spread produced from fruit that has been boiled down with sugar. Jam may be produced from any variety of fruit, but berries and tropical fruits are the most widely used. Smaller fruits, such as berries, or soft fruits, such as strawberries, apricots, and peaches, prepare jams with a jelly-like consistency.

Texture

Peanut butter has a smooth and creamy texture, whereas jam is thick and chunky.

Classic peanut butter comes in two varieties: chunky and smooth. The texture is the primary distinction between the two. Smooth peanut butter has a creamy texture with no chunks, whereas chunky peanut butter comprises bigger bits of peanuts.

There are two forms of jam: seedless and containing seeds. The major difference between them is, once again, texture. When the seeds have been removed, the seedless jam has a smoother texture. The little seeds from the fruit are still present in the jam with seeds.

Flavour

Classic peanut butter has a little salty flavour, although it can be sweetened or unsweetened.

On the other hand, jam is sweet in flavour. Additional sweeteners are added according to the kind of fruit and how sweet it is by nature (mostly sugar is added to get a thick and sticky texture)

Nutritional value

Classic peanut butter is rich in protein and has abundant dietary fibre and folate.

Jams are an excellent source of vitamin C. They are, however, deficient in other nutrients. They are packed with sugar and hence provide an excellent source of energy and fibre.

Health Benefits

Classic peanut butter consumption aids in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. This is due to their high content of monounsaturated fats. It also has protein, magnesium, and vitamins, which are all immensely beneficial to our bodies.

Apart from providing an energy boost, studies have yet to reveal if jam consumption has any health benefits.

Wrap-up

The major difference people go with is how they want to consume them. Many individuals believe that jam goes better with toast, although peanut butter goes well with normal white bread. You can even eat them together by making the classic peanut butter and jam sandwich. But, there are multiple other differences that make them two different things. Both classic peanut butter and jam are beneficial, especially to our moods and taste-buds, but peanut butter is better and healthy.
